I know the pain and frustration of losing countless fights with the scale can be overwhelming– enough to drive us into depression or giving up.

I started my first diet at the age of ten and continued for over forty years. Until one day, it dawned on me:

“Diets don’t work for me!”

Looking through my prayer journals, I saw a pattern emerge. Day after day I was consumed with gaining victory over my cravings. That was when God showed me that to win the fight on the scale, I first needed to win the fight in my heart and mind.  

God revealed that when my cravings for intimacy, love, and comfort are not satisfied with His presence, love, and peace, then my appetite sabotages both my physical and spiritual health.

Through reaching for God first in the midst of my cravings, I learned to disarm my appetite so that it would work for me–not against me. 

There are still days I want to eat an entire bag of Oreos. (I’m still human after all!) 

But with God’s strength, day by day, I choose to savor the freedom that comes from my commitment to reach for God instead of the false–and fleeting–comfort of food.

  • I’ve been baptized in the Jordan River! After I graduated from college, I felt led by the Lord to take a pilgrimage to Israel. I’ll never forget leaving prayers inside the Wailing Wall.
  • I’m a die-hard Andy Griffith fan. I love the episode where Aunt Bee buys the broken freezer and calls Gomer over to fix it. What a laugh!
  • I. LOVE. PUZZLES. The biggest puzzle I’ve ever assembled was a landscape made of over 1,000 pieces!   
  • Believe it or not, I can’t get enough roasted broccoli! I could eat it everyday, you know.
